ADEL, Iowa — A distressed man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Wednesday at a busy intersection here.
An officer of the Adel Police Department heard several gunshots about 2:30 a.m. while on patrol in the area of 11th and Greene streets.
At about the same time a 911 call was received by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office that reported a person down in the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 169, about two blocks from the Adel officer’s location.
Upon arrival at the intersection, the Adel officer located a man in the street who was deceased from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
A loaded handgun was found next to the victim, and an investigation disclosed evidence that the victim took his own life.
The Adel Police Department has referred the case to the State Medical Examiner’s office for further investigation.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending family notifications.
This young man, a freshman at ADM HIGH SCHOOL, took his own life because of bullying. Incessant bullying at ADM HIGH SCHOOL and no one would do anything to stop it. I had to remove my daughter after months of trying to get the bullying stopped, and I kept getting told, “We can’t do anything about it because we didn’t see it.” I am outraged that this young man thought his life needed to end for the bullying to stop. Every single person in a leadership position in that school needs to be held accountable, especially the principal and office staff.
