A homeless man was arrested Monday morning by a Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputy after attempting to elude law enforcement by fleeing in a stolen Mediacom van.

A brief pursuit eastward out of Dexter ended with Antonio Montano Grajales, 24, taken into custody without incident.

According to Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard, Grajales’ own vehicle broke down in Dexter, and he was seen in the vicinity of the local casey’s store. When a Mediacom worker parked the van and entered the store, Grajales hopped in and took off.

“We had a deputy in the area who saw him coming down the road at him,” Leonard said, “so he was pulled over more or less immediately after taking the vehicle.”

Grajales was charged with first-degree theft of a motor vehicle worth more than $10,000.

He is currently in custody at the Dallas County Jail pending a first appearance Tuesday before a judge.
