One man was killed Sunday after exchanging gunfire with an Iowa State Patrol Trooper in rural Moorland, Iowa, west of Fort Dodge, according to a statement issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One man was killed Sunday after exchanging gunfire with an Iowa State Patrol office in rural Moorland, Iowa, west of Fort Dodge, according to a statement issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

According to the statement, the trooper responded to a motorist assist in the 2300 block of Carter Avenue, a location about three miles west of Moorland, and encountered a man and woman involved in a dispute.

The man pointed and fired a handgun at the trooper, who returned fire.

“The male subject and the ISP Trooper exchanged several rounds at each other, and the male subject was subsequently shot and killed,” the DPS statement said.

The trooper was not injured in the shootout.

An initial investigation revealed the man fired several shots into his own vehicle prior to the trooper’s arrival.

The DPS is withholding the name of the dead man pending notification of relatives as well as the name of the trooper in the officer-involved shooting.

The Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating this incident and results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Webster County Attorney’s Office for review.

The Webster County town of Moorland, population 169, lies about six miles southwest of Fort Dodge near U.S. Highway 20.
