Jason Richard Spence, 40, of 204 Fifth St. in Minburn was arrested by the Dallas County Deputy Sheriffs Thursday afternoon on a charge of eluding after leading them on a high-speed pursuit around the Minburn area.

A caller on Baker Street in Minburn reported an erratic driver about 3:45 p.m., according to Dallas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tom Peterson. Deputies located and attempted to stop Spence in his Chevrolet pickup truck east of Minburn, but he instead sped away with law enforcement in pursuit.

The pickup reached speeds of 80 mph while traveling westbound on 180th Street at Pioneer Avenue, according to radio traffic.

Spence lost control of the vehicle on a curve in the 12000 block of Midland Trail, and the truck came to rest in the south ditch. He was taken into custody without incident about 4 p.m.

“The result could have been so much worse with all the buses bringing kids home at that time,” said Melissa O’Connell Timmer of Minburn.

The Dallas County EMS was summoned to the scene to treat the driver for what appeared to be a facial laceration. He was later treated at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry before he was transported to the Dallas County Jail, where he awaits an initial appearance Friday on charges of driving while barred, eluding, failure to obey a stop sign, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain control and reckless driving.

Spence was arrested in October by the Iowa State Patrol on a charge of driving while barred. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 26 in Dallas County District Court.
