The name of longtime Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger will be added to the National Memorial to Fallen Educators in Emporia, Kansas, according to the National Teachers Hall of Fame, which sponsors the memorial.

The popular Perry principal died in January after a shooting at the school where he worked for 27 years. Also killed was 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff, and several other children and adults were injured by the gunfire.

The National Memorial to Fallen Educators will hold its annual rededication ceremony Friday, June 21, at which Marburger will be recognized. His name will eventually join some 200 other names of fallen educators engraved in the memorial’s granite tablets, which were dedicated after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 26 people were shot to death.

“Throughout our history, educators have perished in the line of duty from accidents, violence or from the global coronavirus pandemic,” according to the National Teachers Hall of Fame. “Some lost their lives while protecting students. All of them left this earth heroes. To honor their lives and everlasting contributions, the names and dates of public and private K-12 educators who literally ‘gave their all’ are inscribed in a permanent monument.”
