Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and the upcoming holiday gave Perry Mayor John Andorf an occasion at Monday night’s meeting of the Perry City Council both to praise all mothers and give an official plug for National Small Business Week, which started last Sunday.
“Probably the best way we can recognize them,” Andorf said of Perry’s small shops and shopkeepers, “is to support them with shopping locally. I just mentioned Mother’s Day. What better opportunity for supporting our small businesses than shopping for mom locally?”
To further illustrate the city’s shop-local spirit, the council approved an official urban renewal loan of $23,800 at 3 percent interest to Jeremy Mahler of Jamaica, owner of the Common Wealth Provisions sandwich shop at 1215 Second St. in downtown Perry. Mahler told the council the facade’s facelift will also include the former jewelry store at 1213 Second St.
In addition, the way is clear for the serving of draft beer at the Common Wealth Provisions after the council approved at its March 18 meeting a new class beer and wine liquor license with class B carryout wine permit and Sunday sales privilege for Degenerate Aristocrat DBA Common Wealth Provisions at 1215 Second St.
In other official city business Monday night, the Perry City Council:
- set May 20 as the date for a public hearing on an amendment to the fiscal year 2020 budget, first approved in March,
- appointed Matt McDevitt of Perry to the Perry Planning and Zoning Commission,
- approved an agreement with J and M Displays for a Fourth of July fireworks display,
- authorized the sale of a decommissioned Perry Police Department vehicle and a Perry Public Works Department hot box asphalt trailer,
- established a position with the city of a Wednesday Fellowship coordinator and cook,
- resolved to reassign trustee agency, escrow agency, paying agency and registrar and transfer agency from Bankers Trust Co. to UMB Bank,
- entered a professional consultation services agreement with the Bolton and Menk engineering firm for the evaluation and preliminary design of stormwater wetlands,
- and amended the Perry Code of Ordinances to prohibit parking on the south side of Estella Street between Eighth and 10th streets and to permit parking on the north side of Estella Street between Eighth and 10th streets.
The next official meeting of the Perry City Council is Monday, May 20 at 6 p.m. in the Clarion Room of the Security Bank Building, 1102 Willis Ave.
