Andrew Varley, seated, served as Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1973 to 1974 under the governorship of Robert D. Ray.

A public meet-and-greet fundraiser for Warren Varley, Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 20, will be held Friday, June 29 at 7 p.m. at the home of Kent and Cheri Scheib at 16822 142nd Place in rural Perry.

Also attending will be Iowa State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald and Andrew Varley, Warren’s dad and a former Republican State Representative representing Perry and most of Dallas County from 1973 to 1978 and the Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1973 to 1974.

Fitzgerald will discuss legislative threats to Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System (IPERS), and Andrew Varley will share his notions about how the Iowa State House has changed since the tenure of Iowa Gov. Robert D. Ray.

“We would love to see you there,” said Monica Peitz, a member Perry Area Democrats. “Bring a friend. No donations are expected if they’ve never been to a political event. And bring your lawn chair because we hope to run out of seats. If you come, we promise it will be fun.”

The Scheibs’ home can be reached by driving 2.4 miles west of Perry on Iowa Highway 141, turning south on H Avenue and making an immediate left on 142nd Street. The Scheibs are the first house on the right.

Warren Varley, left, and his father, Andrew Varley celebrated Father’s Day Sunday in a spirit of bipartisanship seldom seen in Iowa politics today.
