Misty VonBehren of Perry has been chosen as the next director of the Perry Public Library. The 23-year veteran library employee started as a page while still a student at Perry High School and has served as the library’s deputy director since 2011.
“I am so pleased to announce that Misty VonBehren will be the new Director of the Perry Public Library,” said Director Mary Murphy, who will retire in October after 13 years in the leadership position.
VonBehren is an active and well-known figure in the Perry community from her years with the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations and activities.
“Being community oriented is at the core of Misty’s professional philosophy,” said Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson. “Misty’s genuine care for the Perry community shines through in her commitment to providing equitable access to information and fostering a welcoming environment for all.”
Erica Rose, professor of library science at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where VonBehren is seeking a degree in information science, emphasized VonBehren’s intellect, professionalism and compassion.
“As library director, I am confident that Misty will nurture growth, innovation and compassionate service for the library, ensuring excellence for the Perry community,” Rose said.
Former Perry Public Library Director Emily Weaver also commended VonBehren for her dedication to the local library and continued passion for library services. She said VonBehren is uniquely qualified for the directorship by her years of professional library experience combined with her notable academic pursuits.
“She possesses extensive, practical experience, an ever-deepening philosophical understanding of Library Science,” Weaver said, “and an unmatched enthusiasm for the community of Perry.”
Murphy was joined by the Perry Public Library Board of Directors and the library staff in congratulating VonBehren on her new position and welcoming her as the new director.
