The first of five new houses is under construction at Eighth and North streets in Perry, the latest projects of the Dallas County Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat purchased the four lots on the east side of Eighth Street between Dewey Avenue and North Street in 2011, according to county records.
The foundation has been dug at the northernmost lot and will be poured this week, according to Sven Peterson of Perry, a member of the Dallas County Habitat for Humanity Steering Committee.
Three more houses will be built in succcession on the block, Peterson said. The group also owns the lot and plans a house on the southeast corner of North and Vine streets. The proximity of all five dwellings to the Perry Elementary School will make them ideal for young families, he said.
The largest non-profit builder in the word, Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 4 million people construct, rehabilitate or preserve more than 800,000 homes since it was founded in 1976. For more information, visit the Dallas County Habitat for Humanity Facebook page.
