WINTERSET, Iowa — A 17-year-old driver died and three teen passengers were injured early Sunday after the pickup they were in left the road and struck a tree in rural Madison County northeast of Winterset.

According to an Iowa State Patrol (ISP) crash report, the accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of 195th Trail near the Hanson Prairie Reserve, where a 2003 GMS Sierra pickup was traveling northeast “at excessive speeds.”

The driver lost control of the vehicle, which entered the “right ditch” and “struck a tree,” according to the ISP report.

The 17-year-old “driver was trapped” and died of injuries sustained in the collision, according to the report. The body was transported to the office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner.

Three teenagers, ages 15, 17 and 18, were inured in the crash and treated at the Madison County Hospital. According to the ISP report, the 15-year-old was transported in a personal vehicle. The 17-year-old was not transported, and the 18-year-old refused transportation by the Madison County EMS.

The names of the victims are being withheld by the ISP pending notification of the families.

“Alcohol is suspected in the accident,” the ISP report said, and none of the young victims was wearing a seatbelt.

The accident remains under investigation, the ISP said.

The Madison County Sheriff’s office responded to assist.
