Youngsters in the PACES program at the Perry Elementary School got an hour’s worth of exercise Wednesday by celebrating Iowa Healthiest State Month, the program that cultivates healthy places for Iowa children and families by using evidence-based healthy eating and active living approaches and a catchy slogan: 5-2-1-0.

The numbers stand for:

  • 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day
  • 2 hours or fewer of recreational screen time
  • 1 hour or more of physical exercise
  • 0 sugary drinks

Youngsters in the PACES program at the Perry Elementary School marked the 12th annual October celebration with a walk around Wiese Park in Perry, led by Perry PACES Director Mary Hillman and Iowa Healthiest State Executive Director Jami Haberl.

Also helping to celebrate Wednesday’s walk were Perry Elementary School Principal Dr. Ryan Marzen and Associate Principal Morgan Rinker.

On Thursday PACES will celebrate their $25,000 grant from United Way of Central Iowa by distributing 150 teacher tool kits, filled with needed supplies for classrooms. The month will also see PACES mark their 23rd celebration of Lights on After School program Oct. 19-20.

Iowa Healthiest State water bottles and other 5-2-1-0 mech is available on the Iowa Healthiest State website.
