PANORA — A four-game winless streak to start the season for the Panorama boys hoopsters was brought to a halt Friday when the Panthers turned back visiting AC/GC, 51-40. The West Central Conference victory moved Panorama to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in WCC play while AC/GC dropped to 0-5, 0-4.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket over the first six minutes of play, with Panorama taking a lead they would never relinquish on a Bryce Halterman basket for a 9-7 lead after one quarter. A 13-7 spread in the second quarter helped the hosts open a 22-14 lead at the half and presented an opportunity to seize the win if the Panthers played well in the third quarter.
That is exactly what happened, as strong play from Halterman and freshman Luke Sotuh, along with solid rebounding from Gracen Welberg and Jeramy Randol helped the home team end the quarter with a 38-29 lead.
Panorama had their widest lead, at 41-29, early in the fourth quarter. AC/GC fought hard the whole way but could not string a run together and eventually fell by an 11-point margin, at 51-40.
Halterman splashed a trio of 3-pointers to lead the Panthers with 24 points. He finished with a double-double thanks to 10 rebounds.
South had 11 points, Welberg seven and Randol five, with Trey Cobb providing three points and Peyton Parker one. Welberg snared eight rebounds and Randol seven, with Halterman tallying four assists and two steals while Welberg recorded three assists and one theft.
Panorama returns to action Tuesday with a trip to Madrid followed Friday by a visit to Van Meter.
