Panorama cagers divide WCAC set at Madrid

MADRID — The Panorama and Madrid boys and girls basketball teams split a pair of conference contests Friday, with the sixth-ranked Panther girls winning by 23 points while the undefeated Tiger boys defended their home court with a 23-point victory.

Panorama (4-0, 3-0) was a 62-39 victor in the girls game, with Madrid (5-0, 3-0) posting a 79-56 win in the boys contest.

The Panther girls jumped to a 13-5 lead after one frame before extending their advantage to 26-16 at the intermission. A 17-8 edge in the third quarter helped Panorama open a 43-24 gap, with the Tigers (1-4, 0-2) unable to threaten the lead over the final eight minutes.

Bailey Beckman scored 19 points to pace the Panthers, with Morgan Johnk and Anna Holloway each providing nine points. Shey Storesund added seven points, Payton Beckman and Ella Waddle six apiece, Lydia Knapp four points and Vallerie Storesund two.

Johnk pulled down 11 rebounds, Holloway six and Knapp and Bailey Beckman five each. The team dominated the glass, clearing 44 boards.

Bailey Beckman led the team with seven steals, with Payton Beckman distributing four assists while Holloway and Knapp had three assists apiece.

The Madrid boys finished their game with a 37-15 rebounding edge. The hosts sank 10-of-24 3-pointers while the Panthers (1-2, 1-2) connected on just 5-of-29 3-point attempts.

Panorama was within striking range at the half, trailing just 36-19. A 21-12 burst from the home team created a 57-41 bulge and the guests were unable to come closer.

Braden Gibbons hit five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 30 points. Devin Fuson had 18 points, Landen Klatt 12 and Jacob Loew 10 to pace Madrid. Fuson had 13 rebounds, Gibbons 10 assists and Klatt four steals.

Gracen Welberg led Panorama with 17 points while Kolby Shackelford added 15 points. Zach Rizzuti had eight points, Jack Weinkoetz six, Trey Cobb and Lucas Leiferman four apiece and Alias Stahl two points. Cobb had five rebounds and four assists for the visitors.

Panorama visits Van Meter tonight and AC/GC Friday.
