Panorama won 10 of 17 contested events events to amass 167 points and easily win the girls side of Thursday’s Davis Family Relays in Perry, with the Panther boys placing fourth in their half of the competition.
The Panther girls were missing six athletes and the boys seven due to injury, vacation or other reasons, but the former still managed to overwhelm the competition with improved efforts in 14 of the 17 compared to the meet last year while the latter were just 16 points from second place.
Panorama scored 167 points in the girls meet, with Carroll second at 112. AC/GC (109) was third and Winterset (77) fourth, with Perry (72) and Saydel (21) also in action. Des Moines Christian won the boys team title with 132 points. AC/GC (112) was second, with Perry (99), Panorama (96), Carroll (95) and Saydel (25) completing the field.
Three Panther girls set a total of four new personal bests (PB), with Gwen Steffen named meet MVP by her coaches with two new PB efforts.
Lydia Knapp was first and Kennedy Andersen sixth in the discus with spins of 109 feet, 10 inches and 83’5, respectively. Knapp was fourth for the Panthers in the long jump at 13’11-3/4.
Senior Devyn Kemble owned the sprints, winning the 100 in 13.46, the 200 in 27.57, and the 400 in 1 minute, 3.03 seconds. Fellow senior Carson Fisher was second in the 100 (14.01) and fourth in the 200 (29.76).
Steffen was second in the 800 in 2:35.7, with Ella Waddle winning the 1500 in 5:31.69 and placing second in the 3000 in 11:25.75.
Morgan Johnk’s 16.5 won the 100 hurdles, with Maggie Woodvine third in 18.42 while Lydia Knapp was second and Maddie Knapp third, in 1:22.1 and 1:26.7, respectively, in the 400 hurdles.
Johnk, Woodvine, Maddie Knapp and Shey Storesund was the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:14.38, with Fisher, Storesund, Woodvine and Johnk first in the 4×100 (55.06) and Johnk, Kemble and Gwen and Olivia Steffen first in the 4×400 (4:27.4).
Also first was the 4×800 (11:00.4) foursome of Brooklyn Behrends, Brianna Hoffman and both Steffen sisters, with the Knapp sisters joined by Fisher and Storesund for second in the 4×200 (1:59.3) while Waddle, Woodvine, Maddie Knapp and Olivia Steffen crossed third in the distance medley (4:54.53).
Seven Panther boys set a total of nine new PBs, with Koltin Sloss and Tanner Godfrey earning co-meet MVP plaudits after both had personal best results in each of their two events.
Spencer Hunt was first in the 200 (23.97) and 400 (53.47) while placing second in the 100 (11.66). Teammate Alias Stahl joined in the 200 as well by crossing sixth in 25.6.
Danny Nordquist placed third in the 1500 with a clocking of 5:09.66 and fifth in the 3200 in 11:22.56, with Josh Carstens fourth in the 3200 in 11:07.31.
Sophomore Luke South won both the 110 (16.83) and 400 (1:02.16) hurdles, with Hunter Soreide, Stahl, South and Godfrey third in the sprint medley in 1:47.73.
Soreide, Godfrey, Carstens and Nordquist teamed for fourth in the distance medley in 4:22.45, with Coltin Stogdill, Dalton Cleek, Paul Hansen and Zac Rizzuti sixth, in 11:24.96, in the 4×800.
Dan Jensen and Sloss were 1-2 in the shot put with pushes of 47’2 and 40’4, with Jensen third at 131’5 and Sloss sixth at 117 feet, in the discus.
“I was very pleased with our performances,” Panorama head coach Greg Thompson said. “It was very cold and many of our athletes tried to talk me into leaving early, but we stuck it out and competed very well. They showed both their talent and their toughness.”
Inclement weather conditions have forced the cancellation of today (Tuesday, April 3) Kip Janvrin Relays. Both Panther teams will compete Thursday at the CR-B Relays, which will be hosted at AC/GC.
