
PANORA — The West Central Activities Conference track meet was held Thursday at Panorama, with the host girls and Madrid boys winning league team titles.
The Panther girls had a winning total of 159 points, with Van Meter a distant second at 110. AC/GC edged Madrid, 99.5-98, for third place, with Earlham fifth at 50 and Pleasanville and Odgen tying for sixth at 41 points. Interstate-35 (38), Woodward-Granger (32), Des Moines Christian (23), West Central Valley (11.5) and Woodward Academy (6) completing the field.
Madrid easily bested DMC, 148-111, for the boys top honor, with AC/GC third at 69. Woodward Academy (66), Earlham (59), Van Meter (54.5), WCV (51) and I-35 (44) followed, with Ogden and Pleasantville — as in the girls standings — tying, this time with 38 points. Panorama (35) and W-G (27.5) capped the list.
Kassidy Bremer won conference titles in both the 100 and 200, finishing in 13.24 seconds and 26.91 seconds, with Hope Arganbright sixth in the 100 in 13.6 ticks.
Gwen Steffen won the 800 in 2 minutes, 25.25 seconds, with Morgan Johnk winning the 100 hurdles in 15.8.
Bailey Beckman (1:03.25) and Olivia Steffen (1:05.1) were 3-6 in the 400, with Ella Waddle second in both the 1500 (5:15.6) and 3000 (10:49.63) while Lydia Lindstrom finished second in the 400 hurdles (1:11.79).
Johnk cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump, with Beckman second and Shey Storesund third in the long jump at 16’3 and 15’6-1/2, respectively. Lydia Knapp and Claire Woodworth were 3-6 in the discus (93’8 and 89 feet) and 6-7 in the shot put (34’7-1/2 and 34’5-1/2).
The 4×800 of Lindstrom, Payton Beckman, Olivia Steffen and Waddle won in 10:06.62, with the 4×100 of Johnk, Arganbright, Bremer and Bailey Beckman second in 41.54 while Knapp, Arganbright, Bremer and Abbi Brown were second in the 4×200 in 1:52.34.
Second place also went to the 4×400 (4:16.51) and distance medley (4:33.86) units, with Lindstrom, Gwen Steffen and the Beckman sisters running the former and Lindstrom, Wadle, Gwen Steffen and Payton Beckman the later.
The Panthers also received points in the sprint medley, with Arganbright, Brown, Payton Beckman and Olivia Steffen sixth in 1:59.71.
The Panorama boys left some events open and ran a lineup differing, in spots, from their usual rotation.
Gracen Welberg sailed over the high jump bar at 6’6 to seize the WCAC title, with Zach Rizzuti placing fourth in the long jump at 18’11-3/4.
Luke South and Welberg were 3-4 in the 110 hurdles in 15.96 and 16.39, with South placing sixth in the 400 hurdles in 58.97 while Welberg’s 24.14 placed eighth in the 200.
Dillon Bennett ran the 100 (13.41) and Dominic Walker the 400 (59.9) for the hosts.
The Panthers placed in just two relays. The shuttle hurdle foursome of Welberg, South, Levi Richey and Logan Hutchins were sixth in 1:10.54, with the 4×800 quartet of Richey, Rizzuti, Walker and Kevin Cogil seventh in 8:53.49.
Bennett, Avery Norman, Declan McCarty and Jadyn Howard finished the 4×400 in 4:16.51 with Cogil, Rizzuti, Hutchins and Walker completing the distance medley in 4:16.33 while Bennett, Howard, McCarty and Norman posted a 2:02.07.
