Monday night’s regular meeting of the Perry City Council will include a special open forum on the subject of fireworks and the city ordinance that governs their use. The public is urged to express its opinions at the council meeting.
According to the agenda for the 6 p.m. meeting in the Towncraft Building at 1122 Willis Ave., “The mayor requests that interested parties converge with those of the same mindset to determine speaking points and will grant each group the same designated amount of time to express their joint stance on the matter of fireworks usage within the city of Perry.”
Patriotic Iowans have enjoyed fireworks liberty since the state legislature legalized the sale and use of consumer fireworks in Iowa in 2017, and the city of Perry permitted their use only on July 4. Cities cannot legally prohibit the sale of fireworks but can only limit their use within the cities.
The Perry City Council amended chapter 125 of the Perry city code in January 2022, which now reads, “The city of Perry deems the use of consumer fireworks as a threat to public safety or a nuisance to landowners and therefore prohibits the use of consumer fireworks within the Perry city limits, except for commercial displays that have received a permit from the city of Perry.”
The penalty for violating the fireworks ordinance is a fine of not less than $250, according to the Perry City Code of Ordinances.
