Troy Price, fourth from right, chairperson of the Iowa Democratic Party, and Bryce Smith, left, chair of the Dallas County Democrats, met with Perry-area Democrats in January 2019, little knowing the SNAFU lying wait for the 2020 Iowa caucuses.

About a dozen Perry-area Democrats plus a few visitors welcomed Iowa Democratic Party Chairperson Troy Price to their Wednesday meeting at the Perry Public Library.

Discussion centered on the 2020 Iowa Caucuses and party efforts to maximize voter turnout, including Dallas County’s role in hosting what is expected to be a large number of candidates for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidency.

Monica Peitz, organizer of the Perry-Area Democracts, hosted the group, and visitors included Dallas County Democratic Chairperson Bryce Smith and Warren Varley of Stuart, who is rumored to be weighing a run for Iowa Senate District 10, a seat currently occupied by two-term Republican Sen. Jake Chapman of Adel.

Price shared stories of his experiences as a longtime Iowa political operative and vocal LGBT rights advocate. He was elected chair of the state party in July 2017. The Durant native has been active in various campaigns and causes around Iowa since graduating from the University of Iowa in 2004, including work for Gov. Vilsack, Lt. Gov. Pederson, Gov. Culver and Lt. Gov. Judge.

Price led Iowa’s largest LGBT advocacy group, One Iowa, and worked behind the scenes as political director for U.S. President Barack Obama’s Iowa re-election campaign and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. He previously served as executive director of the Iowa Democratic Party.
