The Perry Elementary School has completed its first successful year in the Computer Science Professional Development Program, which brought the school a $220,000 grant to enhance computer science by equipping students with essential digital skills to thrive in the 21st century.

The grant helped some 15 teachers earn computer science (CS) endorsements that further enhancing Perry Elementary’s commitment to delivering quality CS education and helping teachers grow professionally.

Over the last four years, the CS program has grown and nurtured innovative thinking and a passion for technology among students. The Perry Elementary School began to implement a plan in spring 2019 to transform the school into a Computer Science building under the direction of former Principal Ned Menke.

So far the school has been able to provide state-of-the-art equipment, resources and valuable learning to students, who can access CS education regardless of their background or ability. The transformative initiative aims to prepare students for future career opportunities and foster a generation of digital leaders.

The current Principal Dr. Ryan Marzen is enthusiastic about the CS program’s accomplishments.

“Our dedicated teachers have embraced this opportunity, pursuing CS endorsements to enhance their expertise in delivering computer science education,” Marzen said. “This has opened doors for our teachers, enabling them to develop essential digital skills and empowering them to be confident teaching them in an increasingly technology-driven world. These endorsements do not cost teachers, and it will help them obtain higher wages within our district. It’s a win-win situation.”

Computer science goes beyond traditional computer literacy, Marzen said. First, CS refers to understanding not only how but also why technology works the way it does. Second, CS refers not only to the ability to use technology but also to actually create technology-based solutions.

Marzen said the Perry Elementary School looks forward to continuing its commitment to providing outstanding computer science education and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive in the digital age

As the program enters its second year, a new partnership with Northwestern University in Missouri promises the Perry Elementary School even greater success. Fall registration help is available June 26-28 from 4-6 p.m., or students may register online. For more information, call the Perry Elementary School at 515-465-5656.
