Sunny spring weather fit the scene Wednesday morning for a ribbon cutting at the Perry Greenhouse and Supply at 1620 Pattee St., where about 30 members of the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce welcomed the business to the local commercial community.

Denise and Jason Levan of Perry own the new greenhouse and garden-supply company, the former longtime home of Schappaugh Florist and more recently of Hartman Floral. The Levans are assisted in the business by greenhouse technicians Vickie Householder of Perry and Teresa Miles of Minburn.

Jason Levan thanked the Chamber members for coming to the shop and expressed his sympathy and solidarity with Trish Roberts of Perry Floral and Gift, a former partner at the greenhouse.

“We’re all hoping things work out for Trish at the flower shop after the fire,” Levan said. “We have more room now in front for a lot of things like garden seed, potatoes, fertilizer and grass seed.”

The showroom already features a variety of onions, such as yellow Spanish and Bermuda white, along with a variety of seed packets, soils and sundry gardening supplies.

Levan gave the members a brief tour of the greenhouse facility, which currently is fully stocked for spring sales with some 6,000 varieties of plants in about 30,000 containers. He explained the large-scale planting and watering process and showed some of the behind-the-scenes tricks of the trade to the delight of the tourists.

The Perry Greenhouse and Supply is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. The phone number is 515-465-4143.
