Perry Homecoming activities highlight Wednesday

The Homecoming King and Queen at Perry High School will be crowned Wednesday evening during a ceremony in the varsity gym. The annual Perry High School Homecoming Volunteer Day will be held today throughout parts of the city as PHS fan out in groups to provide free community services.

The yearly parade will line up at 5:30 p.m. in the PHS parking lot. The parade will begin at 6 pm. and travel down 18th Street to Willis Avenue. The route continues west on Willis Avenue until turning north on Eighth Street, from where it will progress to Pattee Street before returning east along McKinley Street back to the high school.

Community members are encouraged to line the route and show their school and community spirit by cheering on the Bluejays.

The Perry Class of 2024 will be holding a free will pork loin sandwich dinner at the PHS parking lot from 6-8 p.m. with a suggested donation of $5. Also on hand will be Perry coaches Pierce, Jans and Claire Marburger, each of whom will spend time as a target in a fundraiser dunk-tank.

The king and queen will be crowned at a coronation ceremony held in the varsity gym at 8 p.m. Taylor Atwell, Cloe Nance, Lydia Olejniczak, Yamilet Ortega and Sarai Ramos are the candidates for queen, with Fithawi Andemichael, Anthony Chavez, Jonathan Chavez, Jefry Gonzalez and Kyle Hernandez are the king candidates.

High school students are encouraged to dress in “country” style Thursday and in class colors Friday. Freshmen wear red, sophomores white, juniors black and seniors blue.

Class colors will be the order of the day Thursday at Perry Elementary. TK and K should wear red, first grade orange, second grade yellow, third grade green, fourth grade blue and fifth grade black. On Friday all students are encouraged to show their Bluejay spirit and wear blue/white.

Perry (0-3) hosts Des Moines Hoover (1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday for the Homecoming football game. Last season’s contest was not decided until the final play of the game when the Huskies stopped the Jays on a run from the two-yard line to escape with a 14-9 win.
