Something will have to give at Dewey Field Friday when winless DC-G visits Perry, who is also seeking their first victory of the season. The game will also serve as “Military Appreciation Night.”
The teams rank at the bottom of Class 3A in total offensive output and scoring, with each team having scored just 35 points apiece. The Mustangs have allowed 102 points and the Bluejays 76 through four games.
Perry is struggling after losing almost all of its offensive production to graduation, while DC-G is a starkly different squad from the team that finished 10-1 and reached the state quarterfinals last season. The Mustangs were 41-0 victors when the teams met in Grimes last season.
ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry’s defense has played well save for a 41-13 loss at Nevada in week three. Losses of 14-6 to Greene County, of 13-10 at ADM and of 8-6 to North Polk were kept close by a stingy unit that has bent, but is yet to have been broken.
Senior Kaleb Olejniczak is 41-70-3 for 239 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and has rarely had the time to sit in the pocket and look for receivers as he has often been under immediate pressure.
Kato Dougan has pulled in 14 passes for 144 yards and two TDs, with Conner Kenyon (4-40) and Justin Stammer (3-25) and Jerad Narber (3-15) also involved in the aerial game.
Olejniczak has rushed for 282 yards and two TDs on 85 carries with Stammer rushing 49 times for 139 yards and one score to lead the ground attack.
Defensive statistics have not been completely recorded by the team.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS — DC-G opened the season with home losses to Pella (28-0) and Norwalk (34-14) before falling at Ballard, 15-7. Visiting Glenwood posted a 35-14 victory over DC-G last week.
Garrett Morris is 21-62-7 for 251 yards and three TDs, with Isaac Bailey (7-91, 1 TD) and Bryce Jermier (5-61, 1 TD) the chief targets.
Luke Fistler is the leading rusher, having gained 197 yards on 49 carries.
Rowen Collins and Bain Broderick lead the defense with 32.5 and 30 tackles, respectively. Blake Willey has 27.5 stops, with Zach Needham in on 26.5 denials so far. The unit has intercepted three passes and recovered one fumble.
