
The Perry Lions Club regrouped in their usual den at the Hotel Pattee this week after the rustications of Sportsman Park at their last meeting.
Lions Club President John Andorf welcomed 16 members and one guest and joined them in a barbecue brisket sandwich and cup of minestrone soup.
After the meal, Ron Harland of Perry told the club members about his trip to Cuba in March 2017. He illustrated his talk with photos taken around the island nation. He said he flew his airplane 200 miles to Cuba from Naples, Fla.
Harland said he flew with a dentists’ flying club and spoke about the government regulations and the paperwork needed before traveling to Cuba and visiting the country. He said the Cuban people face many hardships and economic problems. The U.S. imposed a ban on all Cuban imports in 1962.
The Perry Lions Club Scholarship of $500 was awarded to PHS senior Anna England of Perry, who will attend Iowa Central Community College in the fall. England will have a duel major in culinary arts and fine art. She is the granddaughter of Lion Harley McGuire.
The Lions will again join with the Optimists this year to raise flags in the “Flags Over Perry” project. Memorial Day on Monday, May 29 will see about 240 flags raised in yards in the morning and lowered before sundown.
In other business, Charlie Thompson was welcomed to the ranks of the Perry Lions Club. He said he was a member of the Minburn Lions Club years ago.
