A Perry man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly tried to evade service of an arrest warrant by fleeing on foot from law enforcement and then barricading himself inside his residence.
Edwin Antonio Montes Mendez, 29, of 624 Third St., Perry, was charged with child endangerment, two counts of interference with official acts and driving while barred.
The incident began about 6 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 600 block of Third Street in Perry, where officers of the Perry Police Department tried to serve an arrest warrant to Montes Mendez.
The Guthrie County warrant was ordered in May for failure to appear on an original charge of driving while barred.
According to court records, when Montes Mendez saw the officers “walking towards his residence,” he “took off sprinting, and a foot pursuit ensued.”
Montes Mendez circled back and reentered his residence, where he allegedly “barricaded himself inside,” and both he and “his family members inside the residence failed to open the door” to the officers, according to court records.
At length, “after being advised multiple times” by law enforcement, Montes Mendez exited the residence “an hour later” and “was placed in custody,” according to court records.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s office assisted the Perry Police Department in arresting Montes Mendez.
It was also found that a 6-year-old child was present in the residence during the stand off, and as a result of the events the minor victim allegedly “was emotionally heightened, more specifically, scared and crying,” according to court records.
Montes Mendez is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 21 in Dallas County District Court.
