Leonard Dayle Channell, 37, of Perry was arrested Friday on charges of first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and child endangerment.

A Perry man was arrested Friday night after he allegedly punched the mother of his child in the face and flung their child into the air.

Leonard Dayle Channell, 37, of 516 Clearview Dr., Perry, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and child endangerment.

The incident began about 6:15 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Clearview Drive, where officers of the Perry Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

Arriving officers heard the sounds of Channell “yelling and then heard sounds of objects slamming,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with the female victim, upon whom they observed “noticeable swelling and red marks on her face,” according to court records.

A witness told the officers that Channell was seen striking “the victim with a closed fist on the left side of her face while holding their child,” according to court records. The witness said that Channell also “threw the child in the air.”

Channell is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.

Channell was arrested in Perry on charges of child endangerment and first-offense OWI in September. He pleaded guilty Dec. 8 in Dallas County District Court and will be sentenced Feb. 17. He was arrested in Grimes on a charge of child endangerment in 2017. The case was later dismissed in Polk County District Court.
