NEWTON — Despite having only six swimmers available to compete, the Perry swim team left the Newton YMCA pool with a split Tuesday. Host NCMP was a 78-20 victor over Perry in the triple-dual, but Perry managed to scrape out a 46-40 win over Oskaloosa.
NCMP was a 74-15 winner over Oskaloosa at the meet, in which each team was scored against each of their two opponents separately.
The YMCA pool is measured in meters, not yards, the common distance calculation for high school meets. As a result, all times recorded where somewhat higher than normal, as each race was longer than usual.
Despite that, when the formula for comparing meters-to-yards was used, Perry finished with three personal-bests. Dannah Karolus touched in 1 minute, 8.24 seconds to beat both foes in the 100 freestyle, with Amanda Holwegner third against Oskaloosa in 1:15.79 in the race, both of which were personal-best efforts.
Avery Miner also had a PB for Perry when she touched third to Oskaloosa in the 50 free in 35.75. Holwegner was 3/2 (against NCMP/Oskaloosa) in the same event with a clocking of 34.44 seconds.
Dannah Karolus was 2/1 in the 200 free in 2:32.71, with Abby Herman 3/2 in the 200 IM in 3:15.73 while Jaylene Karolus was 2/1 in the 100 butterfly in 1:20.24.
Sarah Vaughn swam the 100 breaststroke in varsity competition for the first time, touching 3/2 in 1:40.62. She was 2/1 in the 400 meter (normally the 500 yard) freestyle in 5:32.62, with Jaylene Karolus 2/1 in the 100 backstroke in 1:21.18.
The Jayettes were third against the Cardinals (NCMP) and first against the Indians (Oskaloosa) in both the 200 free and 400 free relays. Abby Herman, Holwegner, Miner and Dannah Karolus swam the former in 2:17.74, with Herman, Vaughn and both Karolus sisters competing in the latter, which finished in 4:55.92.
Herman, Holwegner, Miner and Dannah Karolus swam the 200 medley relay, placing 3/2 with a time of 2:38.22.
Perry will host Grinnell and familiar foe Algona Tuesday at the MCB Pool. Senior Anna Ridnour will be honored at the meet, which will be a “pink out” and dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The meet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
