Perry volleyball visits Roland-Story, plays in weekend tourney

STORY CITY, IA — Perry began HOIAC volleyball play with a trip to Roland-Story Tuesday after having played four matches in the AC/GC tournament Saturday.

Roland-Story (10-8, 1-1) was a 25-11, 25-10, 25-5 victor over Perry, who fell to 3-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Perry began action Saturday with a 22-20, 22-20 win over Madrid before dropping a 21-12, 15-21, 15-11 contest to Colfax-Mingo. West Central Valley bested Perry, 21-7, 21-12, with a 24-22, 21-16 loss to Nodaway Valley capping Perry’s play in Guthrie Center.

Taylor Atwell had five assists, and Gaby Orellana one against R-S, with Ashley Cerna making four kills, Kathryn West three, Maci Tunink two, and Callie Steva one.

Nine digs from Cerna led the team, with Charity Parnell notching eight digs while West tallied six digs and Yamilet Ortega five. Addison Huntington had four digs, Orellana three and Atwell two. Steva had one block and Tunink and West an assisted block each.

Perry served 23-of-28 (82 percent) with three aces. Atwell was 6-6-2, Cerna 4-5-1 and Huntington 4-of-4. Parnell was 4-of-5, Steva 2-of-2, West 3-of-4 while Tunink was 0-for-2.

Atwell had a combined 28 assists over the weekend while Orellana added eight. Huntington had four assists, Madison Stika three, West and Ortega two each and Cerna and Steva one each.

Cerna recorded 12 kills and Steva 10 kills, with West adding nine, Tunink eight, Parnell five, Atwell four and Orellana one.

Stika (18) led Perry in digs, with Parnell (17), Huntington (16), Cerna (14), Atwell (11), Ortega (9), West (6), Orellana (3), Tunink (3) contributing as well. Steva and Karagyn Whelchel also had digs.

Perry was a combined 112-129 (87 percent) serving but had only three total aces. However, the Jayettes were particularly sharp, connecting on all 32 of their attempts in the win over Madrid.

Parnell was 33-37-3 behind the line, Cerna 25-of-27, Tunink 17-of-22 and Atwell 12-of-13. West finished 13-of-16, Huntington 7-of-8, Stika 4-of-4 and Orellana 1-of-1.

Perry hosts West Marshall in HOIAC play Thursday.
