CARROLL — The Perry matmen dispatched Carroll, 49-28, and Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 52-30, in triangular action Thursday.
The Gaels forfeited six matches to the Bluejays, as St. Edmond had no competitors at 152 pounds, nor at 182, 195, 220, 285 and 106. Of the eight contested matches, Perry won just three, but, combined with the 36 forfeited points, scored enough for the easy team win.
Zach Stewart pinned Payton Sitzmann in 5 minutes, 5 seconds at 132 pounds for one of the Perry victories decided on the mat, with Tanner Darr (160) recording a 20-7 major decision against Ty Smith while Eli Saemisch (170) needed just 55 seconds to pin Zach Schnurr.
In contrast to the dual with St. Edmond, the battle with Carroll was decided on the mat save at 126, where Perry’s Bryan Catalan received a forfeit.
The Tigers raced to a 22-0 lead with wins at 132, 138, 145 and 152, but Perry responded at 160 when Darr pinned Landon Hinnman in 2:28. Saemisch tallied an 8-0 major decision against Elijah Dirkx at 170, with Adan Medina pinned Dylan Delp in 1:30 at 182 as the Jays closed to within 22-16.
A loss by fall gave Carroll a 28-16 edge, but were the last points the hosts would score.
Alonzo Zarate (220) stuck Trystan Stewart in 1:31 and Tyler Soll (285) nailed Zach Beyerink in 1:25 to make the score 28-all, with Kaleb Olejniczak’s pin of Cade Neuman in 29 ticks at 106 giving Perry a 34-28 lead.
Mana Martinez (113) made it 40-28 by sticking Bryce Wuebker in 65 seconds, with Fernando Catalan’s 5-2 win over Ezra Dirkx at 120 pushing the gap to 42-28 before the final six points came on a forfeit.
Perry will conclude the pre-holiday portion of their schedule Saturday when the varsity competes in the Waukee Duals while the junior varsity visits the North Polk Invitational.
