Sidney Vancil of Perry, a third-year student pharmacist at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, was awarded the 2023 Jerry Karbeling Leadership Award at the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) annual meeting June 14 in Des Moines.
The Karbeling Leadership Award, established by the IPA Foundation as a tribute to the leadership and service of the late Jerry Karbeling, reflects Karbeling’s passion for involvement in professional organizations and the political process by recognizing one student pharmacist from each of Iowa’s colleges of pharmacy who demonstrates outstanding participation in these areas.
Vancil completed two years of undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa prior to starting pharmacy school, and within the college she has served as president of the Student Leadership Council and is actively involved in the Pediatric Pharmacy Association, National Community Oncology Dispensing Association, Pharmacy Leadership Society, Rho Chi Honor Society, Pharmacy Student Ambassador Network, Graduate and Professional Student Government as well as other professional organizations and committees.
“Sidney has already made an impact with great passion and engagement as a student pharmacist,” said Kate Gainer, executive vice president and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association. “It will be exciting to watch her career unfold and excel in the future.”
Vancil’s nominators and advisors commended her leadership roles and her work in promoting mental health and wellbeing across the university, and they recognized her balance of “academics, work and a service leadership mindset,” Gainer said.
Within the Iowa Pharmacy Association, Vancil has served on the Board of Trustees, House of Delegates and Student Advisory Committee. After graduation, she plans to pursue a residency in acute care and hopes to one day be a pediatric pharmacist.
