Mahlon Conaway of Perry, a veteran of World War II, will be honored Friday during the Military Appreciation Night at Dewey Field.

The Perry High School football team will host Military Appreciation Night during Friday night’s home game against Woodward-Granger at Dewey Field.

World War II veteran Mahlon Conaway of Perry, who turned 100 last month, will be honored as the Bluejays’ honorary captain for the game as part of the evening’s ceremonies. Conaway was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 and served with the 36th Infantry Division, earning numerous distinctions for valor and service.

“This night is about more than football,” said Perry High School Activities Director Tina Lutterman. “It’s about coming together as a community to show our appreciation for the men and women who have served and to honor a true hometown hero in Mr. Conaway.”

At the start of the game, the PHS football team will rush the field, carrying U.S. flags provided by the Perry Lions Club. Other local veterans will also be recognized during the evening for their service to the country.

Head Football Coach Josh Vannorman emphasized the importance of the moment for his team and students.

“We want our players to understand that wearing the Bluejay uniform is special,” Vannorman said, “but the freedoms they enjoy every day were made possible by people like Mr. Conaway and all of our veterans. Carrying the flags onto the field is a small way to honor a big sacrifice.”

He said the community is invited to come together in celebration and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans, symbolizing unity, sacrifice and community pride.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dewey Field in Perry. For more information, please contact the Perry Activities Office at 515-465-3503.
