PHS junior Amber Benway earns laurels for poetry

Perry High School junior Amber Benway's poem, “Ode to a Marimba,” appeared in the winter 2020 edition of the American High School Poets anthology.

Perry High School junior Amber Benway of Perry recently had her poetry published in the National High School Poetry Contest.

Benway’s “Ode to a Marimba” appeared in the winter 2020 edition of the American High School Poets anthology, entitled “Of Love and Dedication.”

According to the National High School Poetry Contest website, “Of Love and Dedication” is “a study of love-and-loyalty-based poetry written by teenagers from all over the U.S. It explores how today’s teens approach various types of love and loyalty issues.”

The quarterly anthology is published by the Live Poets Society of NJ in conjunction with JUST POETRY!!!, the National High School Poetry Quarterly Magazine.

Benway is the daughter of James Benway and Michelle Golden of Perry and enjoys the mentorship of PHS language arts instructor Christine Krohn.

Benway said her future plans include pursuing a degree in music and music education and eventually becoming a high school band director for high school.
