The Perry High School Drama Department will participate in the 2024 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase at the Des Moines Civic Center on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m.

Sponsored by EMC Insurance Companies, the showcase will honor the achievements of PHS in its April production of “The SpongeBob Musical.” PHS will join more than 100 other high schools from across Iowa in the Des Moines Performing Arts production, the culmination of a year-long education initiative.

The PHS Drama Department will be the subject of a special video presentation in celebration of its receipt of an Outstanding Overall Technical and Creative Achievement Award, one of the showcase’s highest honors.

PHS seniors Maddy Hollingsworth and Alexa Nelson will represent PHS by performing in a collaborative inter-school medley led by a guest Broadway music director and choreographer.

Senior Riley Sergent will also participate in the Triple Threat Award program with other advanced performing students, who will perform at the showcase and also audition for theater camp scholarships and the opportunity to represent Iowa at the Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, in New York City this summer.

Senior Emily Dowd has been selected to serve as a student assistant stage manager for the showcase through a competitive process. She will work alongside the professional team to run rehearsals, call cues and do everything to execute the statewide event.

Several PHS students will be recognized at the event for the following awards and honors:

  • Alexa Nelson for Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role as SpongeBob Squarepants
  • Riley Sergent for Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role Patrick Star
  • Hunter Ayers for Special Recognition for Performance in a Principal Role as Squidward Q. Tentacles

Tickets for the May 30 event start at $15 and go on sale on Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at DMPA.org, the Des Moines Civic Center ticket office and by phone at 515-246-2300. The Awards Showcase will also be live-streamed at IowaPBS.org as part of a collaboration with Iowa PBS. Iowa PBS will broadcast a highlights special of the event later this summer.
