LAST MEETING — Madrid rushed for 359 yards and held Panorama to less than half that total in rolling to a 35-6 victory. Almost all of the damage done on both sides of the ball for the Tigers has graduated. Panorama seniors Gunnar Grunsted (7 carries, 61 yards) and Brody Rickheim (9-29, 1 TD) led the Panther ground game.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS — Panorama owns wins of 49-0 over DMC and of 52-14 at Woodward Academy but takes a big step up in competition despite Madrid’s 0-2 start.
Quarterback Luke South is 8-17-1 for 76 yards, with Conner Meinecke (4-43) and Blaine Barber (3-32) his chief targets.
The team has given carries to 15 rushers and has compiled 674 yards and 10 TDs on 103 hauls. Rickheim (26-208, 3 TDs), South (23-140, 2 TDs), Grunsted (19-105, 1 TD) and Barber (7-84, 3 TDs) lead the way.
Barber has proven deadly whenever he touches the ball, having also scored on an 80-yard kickoff return and a 56-yard punt return.
The defense has recovered two fumbles and intercepted five passes, with Tanner Godfrey and Michael Allen each returning thefts for scores.
ABOUT THE TIGERS — Madrid was stopped at Woodward-Granger, 26-6, in their opener before falling, 21-20, at home to a very tough Earlham team (who lost, 21-20, to Van Meter in their opener) last week.
Sophomore quarterback Tate Lobeck is only 4-of-20 for 92 yards through the air, with Landon Burke catching three passes for 83 yards.
Madrid’s ground game features a pair of swift 170-180 pound backs in Logan Gray (38-352, 2 TDs) and Travis Schieltz (22-154, 1 TD) and a bruising 200-pounder in state wrestling runner-up Cody Fisher (41-226, 1 TD).
Landen Burke has 17 tackles — three for a loss and a sack — to lead the defense, with Tyler Miller making 11 stops. The unit has forced one interception.
OUTLOOK — It would be easy to doubt Madrid after an 0-2 start, but veteran coach Lyle Alumbaugh will be keen to remind his Panorama squad how dangerous the Tigers remain.
The Tigers lack the explosiveness of the departed Michael Santi but can still move the ball — the difference may be up front, where the team has allowed 661 rushing yards in their first two games.
Panorama will need to prove an ability to run the ball and mix in the occasional success in the passing game. The Panthers must also avoid having a rash of penalties like the 12 flags thrown against them last week.
