LAST MEETING — The Lynx did whatever they wanted, and whenever they wanted to, in a 55-0 shellacking. The hosts ran for 406 yards and six scores, completed a pass for a 30-yard touchdown and returned a punt for a TD. Perry had 31 yards in the air and only 29 on the ground.
ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — An offensive eruption at Gilbert last Friday pushed Perry to 1,378 total yards of offense this year — 19 more yards than the team had all of last season.
Three school records were set in the victory. Quarterback Alexis Garrido was 18-28-1 for 319 yards and three touchdowns, surpassing Drew Lipovac’s former mark of 295 passing yards in a game. Brandon Kenyon had 11 catches for 202 yards and three TDs; he snapped Zach Mundy’s 172 yards in a game school record and the nine-catch in a game standard shared by Mundy and Mark Eaton.
Garrido is now 62-126-6 with nine TDs and 850 yards — Perry had 632 passing yards in all of 2016.
Brandon Kenyon (29-444, 5 TDs) and Reece Dunlap (25-395, 4 TDs) continue to vex opposing backfields, and showed last week (a combined 17-336 and 4 TDs) what they can do if Garrido is given the time to find them in the pattern.
Garrido (54-159, 1 TD) leads a ground game that must get better, if for no other reason than an extra second on drop-back passing plays. Dunlap has 29 carries for 81 yards and Donald Chavez 50 rushes for 74 yards and a score.
Kaleb Olejniczak (44.5), Mana Martinez (40) and Dunlap (30.5) lead the team in tackles. Perry has fallen on eight fumbles and made eight interceptions, with a talented secondary knocking down a great number of passes.
Senior placekicker German Alvarenga is 14-of-14 on PAT kicks and has hit on all three of his field goal attempts, with a long of 35 yards.
ABOUT THE LYNX — The single-wing offense if frustrating to plan against and difficult to stop in the best of conditions, but No. 54 DC-G did just that last week with a 20-0 victory.
Webster City is second in 3A with 1,946 rushing yards. They played last week without top gainer Zane Willians (124-1,113, 16 TDs) and his availability for Friday is an open question.
Quarterback Dylan Steen (84-497, 4 TDs), Trace Kepler (48-152) and Drake Doolittle (24-105) are also ground threats.
Steen is 20-45-3 for 412 yards and six scores through the air, with Jordan Tanner (14-202, 3 TDs) the most prolific target to date.
Caleb Olson (52), Luke Rohmiller (37) and Max Hackbarth (31.5) pace the defense. The Lynx have recovered one fumble and picked off eight passes, with Steen making seven of those thefts.
OUTLOOK — Even without Williams the Lynx are an outstanding team. The line is big and athletic and will be a real challenge for Perry to contain.
The Jays found an offensive rhythm last week, and if they can possess the ball and score when they have it they could keep the game close and put all the pressure back on the visitors, who cannot risk another district loss.
