Perry's Manasses Martinez returns a kick off 30 yards against host Ballard Friday. Reece Dunlap (18) makes a block on the play, with Janier Puente (27) following the action. Perry returns home Friday to host Boone.

LAST MEETING — The Toreadors threw for 122 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 189 more and a score in stuffing the Bluejays, 27-10. Perry ran for only 32 yards on 16 carries and while passing for 124 yards, 50 of those came on a tipped pass with nine seconds left in the game that resulted in the only Bluejay visit to the end zone. Kaden Sherrard led the Boone ground game with 131 yards on 23 rushes.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry began the season with their first 2-0 start in many years, with victories over North Polk (28-21) and Nevada (21-14), both of which required fourth quarter heroics by the Bluejays. Their first trip away from Dewey Field was to a rain-soaked Ballard last week, where the Bombers used two long TD passes in the second quarter to break open a 7-6 game en route to a 27-6 victory.

The Perry offense has shown some flashes of promise but has mostly struggled, forcing the defense — which has played well — to spend too much time on the field. The Jays have thrown for only 149 yards and two TDs and rushed 90 times for just 309 yards and four scores. The defense has made four interceptions and fallen on five fumbles.

Quarterback Adan Medina is 16-of-34 passing for 149 yards and two scores while throwing one interception. Reece Dunlap has four catches for 56 yards, with Janier Puente (4-22), Donald Chavez (3-28), Mark Campos (3-22) and Brandon Kenyon (2-11) catching passes. Puente and Kenyon have each pulled in a scoring aerial.

Medina leads the ground game as well with 141 yards and two scores on 48 carries. Chavez (19-71), Campos (18-71, 1 TD) and Dunlap (5-26, 1 TD) have also seen their share of rush duties.

The defensive leader is also Medina, who has totaled 22.5 stops. Puente and Tyler Soll have 19.5 tackles apiece, with Chavez in on 18 stops and Grant Eklund on 16. Six sacks from Puente paces the defense, with Soll having two sacks.

ABOUT THE TOREADORS — Boone opened with a 28-7 road loss at No. 8 Creston/O-M, but has bounced back with home victories over Bondurant-Farrar (25-28) and Iowa Falls-Alden (29-6).

The Toreadors have 424 yards and four TDs through the air and 624 yards and five scores on 102 carries while the defense has come away with two interceptions and four fumbles.

Tanner Schminke brings plenty of experience back to the quarterback spot, with the senior dual-threat having connected on 35-of-70 passes for 424 yards and four scores. He has been picked off three times.

Mason Hulse (12-171, 3 TDs), Kade Morain (11-132, 1 TD) and Jon Herrick (7-73) have been his main targets.

Eli Johnson has rushed 22 times for 259 yards and three scores, but Schminke is nearly as deadly, having kept the ball 49 times for 237 yards and three visits to the end zone. Sherrard (27-138) has been the other key ground gainer.

Colby Wadsworth (19), Schminke (16.5), Jaymin Sutton (15) and Morain (14) are the tackle leaders, with Morain making eight stops for a loss and Wadsworth four.
