LAST MEETING — Webster City pushed Perry around in a 42-6 win at Dewey Field. The Lynx completed just one pass, but it went for a 22-yard touchdown. However, the ground game amassed 349 yards and five touchdowns on 44 carries, and while Perry passed for 121 yards and a late score, the Jays were held to only 42 rushing yards on 21 attempts.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — Perry has struggled offensively for most of the season, and especially in their four district losses, in which the team has been outscored, 137-20. The Bluejays have passed for 401 yards and three touchdowns and while scoring five times on the ground have gained only 510 yards on 171 carries, 53rd of the 56 Class 3A squads.

However, the play of quarterback Alexis Garrido and the ability of the Bluejays to get the ball into the hands of speedy wide out Reece Dunlap has opened running space, and improvements appear just around the corner.

Garrido is 18-41-2 for 198 yards and two scores in the past two games, with Adan Medina 23-48-2 for 202 yards and two scores before being moved to occasional duty at tailback while continuing to play linebacker.

Dunlap has 14 grabs for 170 yards and a TD, with Janier Puente making 11 catches for 72 yards and a score while Brandon Kenyon is the third most targeted option with six receptions for 35 yards and a TD.

Medina’s 208 yards on 77 rushes leads the team, with Donald Chavez (42-139), Mark Campos (27-110) and Dunlap (15-93) also involved. Medina and Dunlap have each scored twice and Campos once.

Brandon Juarez leads the defense with 39 tackles, with Campos (33), Medina (32), Puente (30.5) and Tyler Soll (29) also high on the tackle chart. Perry has recovered seven fumbles and made five interceptions, returning one for a score.

ABOUT THE LYNX — Coach Bob Howard’s single-wing attack has vexed defenses for years, and if a defensive line cannot jam the offensive lineman and prevent traps and counters it can be a long night.

Webster City is only 53rd in passing yards in 3A with 218 (for one score), but the deadly ground game has piled up 2,358 yards and 30 TDs on 312 carries so far. The team has a 140-54 scoring edge in district games.

Quarterback Drew Fielder is 9-33-5 for 189 yards and a TD but has 380 yards and three TDs on 71 carries. Zane Carter (4-88, 1 TD) and Hunter Hayes (2-32) have seen the limited receiving chores.

Robert Frederickson, a 5-10, 210 pound senior, is the leading weapon. He has rushed 134 times for 1,017 yards and 13 TDs, with Payton Kannuan — who had 199 yards and two scores on nine carries against Perry last season — totaling 575 yards and seven TDs on 55 hauls through six games. Trace Kepler (17-174, 4 TDs) and Zane Williams (24-168, 3 TDs) are also a part of the attack.

Caleb Olson (44) and Williams (27.5) lead a defense that has five interceptions (one for a TD) and a fumble recovery to their credit. Cole Briese has 20.5 stops, but six are sacks and seven others have been behind the line of scrimmage.
