Reliable, affordable transportation a boon to good health

Lack of transportation impacts our access to healthcare, healthy food, employment and spiritual and social support. We can improve the health of individuals and our community with expanded access to transportation.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

Because Dallas County’s growth has outpaced the services and infrastructure available to support health in our communities, many residents must travel farther for medical care, food and social services.

Transportation is a significant barrier and cost burden for some households. Monthly transportation costs for a family in Dallas County range from $526 to $790 per month, according to a study by the United Way of Central Iowa.

HIRTA buses are the only public transportation option available in Dallas County. We have many single-car households and families who cannot afford gas or repairs for cars they own.

A local chapter of the Rotary Club partnered with Dallas County Public Health, HIRTA, faith-based organizations and supportive citizens to create a grassroots solution called SAIL-DC, a volunteer program offering rides for persons in and around Dallas Center.

Because the volunteers are available outside of weekday HIRTA operation hours, SAIL-DC fills a void. The Dallas County Hospital and community partners are exploring the possibility of a similar program in Perry.

For help with transportation options, call the Dallas County Health Navigation at 515-993-3750.

Ann Cochran is health navigation coordinator for the Dallas County Public Health Department.
