The Perry Police Department is seeking the assistance of Perry business owners and residents who have security camera systems. If you have video security cameras, then the Perry Police Department encourages you to register the location and capabilities of your cameras with the department.

Under the new Security Camera Registry Program, the police department will compile a list of privately owned security camera systems in the community in order to enhance crime prevention and public safety.

Registration is voluntary, the department said Monday. All personal information will be for official use only.

The goal of the camera registry program is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration between the Perry Police Department and the Perry community, police said.

“Video surveillance is one of the best methods for apprehending and convicting criminals,” the Perry Police Department statement said. “Installing a video surveillance system is a great example of community-police partnerships and is something we highly value as a law enforcement agency serving our community.”

By using the geographic locations of the registered cameras, the police will be able to directly contact citizens in an area in which a crime occurred. The police might ask citizens to check their video surveillance systems for a specific date and time for video capturing a suspect, getaway car or a crime.

If the resident finds video evidence, the resident may contact the Perry Police Department’s Security Camera Registry Program to make arrangements for video retrieval. Residents may register their security cameras on the Perry website.
