
WOODWARD — Interstate-35 remained unbeaten after handing Woodward-Granger a 24-20 loss in the Class 1A District 7 opener for both Friday.
The Roadrunners (5-0, 1-0) ran 40 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns and added 143 passing yards and a score, with Carter Bussanmas drilling three PAT boots and a 35-yard field goal to account for their points.
The Hawks (3-2, 0-1) were playing without quarterback Keith Braunschweig. Reese Jamison stepped into the role, finishing 3-of-8 for 85 yards, including a 30-yard TD strike to Bryce Achenbach, who caught all three completions.
Jamison added 48 rushing yards and two short scoring runs on nine carries. Tate Lettow carried the ball 20 times for 101 yards and added one two-point conversion, with Cade Polich (7-21), Gabe Yingst (6-31) and Achenbach (1-2) also hauling the pigskin. W-G finished with 203 ground yards on 43 totes.
Joey Bregar hit 9-of-14 passes for 143 yards for I-35. Richie Griglione (5-90, 1 TD) did the most damage, with Tanner Daniels (3-42) and Bussanmas (1-11) also making catches.
Mason Cassady (26-149, 1 TD) led the rushing charge for the guests, with Bregar (9-23, 1 TD), Jack Smith (4-13) and Bussanmas (1-5) also running the ball.
Yingst had 14 tackles to lead the W-G defense, with Jamison making nine tackles, Achenbach 8.5 stops and Jackson Newland seven. Polich and Kris Kammerer each fell on a Roadrunner fumble.
Woodward-Granger is celebrating Homecoming this week, and will host the Woodward Academy (2-3, 0-1) Friday. The Knights fell to host Pella Christian, 51-18, in their district opener. The Academy has wins of 13-8 over AC/GC and of 48-13 at Martensdale-St. Marys but suffered a 28-26 loss at Wayne and a 40-33 home loss to Ogden, who W-G defeated, in Ogden, 46-7.
