Carla Raye Bousman, 63, of Perry is set to appear in Polk County District Court on a new charge of escape from custody.

Sabrina Ray’s grandmother, Carla Raye Bousman, 63, of Perry, has reached a plea agreement with the State of Iowa, according to an announcement released Wednesday by Dallas County District Court Judge Terry Rickers.

Bousman was arrested May 31, 2017, in connection with the starvation death of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray and charged with three counts of first-degree kidnapping, one count of child endangerment resulting in death and one count of obstructing prosecution or defense.

Court documents claim Bousman allegedly “removed and altered evidence at the crime scene to obstruct the prosecution of others,” and she “furnished false information” to law enforcement.

According to complaints filed in the case, “Physical evidence indicated Sabrina Lynn Ray had been confined to a bedroom in the residence with her two sisters and had been subjected to torture and cruelty causing serious injury and death,” and Bousman allegedly participated in “the confinement and denial of adequate food and water for” Sabrina and her sisters.

The two surviving girls also “had been secretly confined and had suffered unreasonable force, torture and cruelty for an extended period of time,” treatment “intended to cause serious injury,” according to the complaints.

Carla Raye Bousman’s daughter, Misty Bousman Ray, 41, and her son-in-law, Marc Ray, 42, both face multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with Sabrina’s death.

Carla Raye Bousman’s plea hearing is scheduled for Friday, April 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dallas County Courthouse. Judge Rickers said details of the plea agreement will be revealed at the time of the plea hearing.
