Perry Community School District Board Director Linda Andorf and Superintendent Lynn Ubben met with lawmakers Tuesday at the Iowa State capitol in Des Moines in the Iowa Association of School Board’s annual “Day on the Hill.”

The event gives local school district leaders a chance to lobby their legislators and get a jump on new legislative priorities and initiatives emerging in the 2017 legislative session that convened Jan. 9.

Special guests for the morning session were Sen. Amy Sinclair (R-Allerton), chair of the Senate Education Committee, and Rep. Walt Rogers (R-Cedar Falls), chair of the House Education Committee. Andorf and Ubben also visited with Sen. Jake Chapman (R-Adel) and Rep. Chip Baltimore (R-Boone), who represent portions of the Perry Community School District.

Rep. Dave Heaton (R-Mt. Pleasant), who chairs the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee, also made time for the Perry delegation.

Ubben said the Perry school district’s top concerns are adequate and on-time funding, flexibility of categorical funds, extension of the “statewide penny.” funds and proposed changes to state laws governing union negotiations and collective bargaining.

“This was Director Andorf’s first time lobbying on the hill,” Ubben said, “and she did a great job of advocating for Perry kids and community. Many thanks to Senator Chapman and Representatives Baltimore and Heaton for taking the time to listen.”
