The Perry Public Library and Hometown Heritage at the Carnegie Library Museum have announced the following programs for September 2024.

Hometown Heritage at the Carnegie Library Museum Presents Nefarious Iowa: Criminals with Ties to Iowa Exhibit – July 31 to September 20
Immerse yourself in Iowa’s criminal past with the Carnegie Library Museum’s newest exhibit. Explore our displays, discover the surprising criminal history of Perry and surrounding areas, and identify famous criminals with connections to Iowa! This is a free exhibit during the Carnegie Library Museum’s regular hours: Sunday and Monday: closed; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; Thursday: 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. September Grab and Go Adult Craft Kit – DIY Glowing Glass Pumpkin
Prepare for fall with this miniature craft that you can use for autumn ambiance or to create a spooky Halloween vibe. Adult patrons can bring home one Free Adult Grab and Go Adult Craft Kit from the Perry Public Library. This craft kit includes materials and instructions for one DIY Glowing Glass Pumpkin. September Grab and Go Teen Craft Kit – DIY Glass Sconce Ghost
This September, teens can learn to make their own haunted, lighted glass sconce ghosts with our newest DIY craft kit. Teens, 12 to 18, are invited to come into the library during September to pick up a Free Grab and Go Teen Craft Kit! This month’s kit includes supplies to make your own DIY Glass Sconce Ghost. Teen patrons can bring home one Free September Grab and Go Teen Craft Kit from the Perry Public Library. Novel-Teas Book Match: A Monthly Program for Adults
We think a good book and a delicious cup of tea are the perfect pairing. With our Adult Novel-Teas Book Match program, participants can sign up each month to receive an individualized book recommendation, with a complementary tea pairing. Simply register, and complete the personalized Book Match Form by September 15, and our Adult Services Librarian, Mindy, will help you find your next book, while our tea enthusiast, Trista, will select your tea. September Book Matches will be available for patrons to pick up beginning October 1st. Patrons must be 18+ to participate and spots are limited. RVTV Cy-Hawk Street Party Tour Comes to Perry: Monday, September 2
RVTV will be coming to Perry on Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd! For more than 20 years, Keith Murphy and the WHO 13 Sports team have celebrated our state’s good-natured rivalry game between the University of Iowa and Iowa State University football teams by shining a spotlight on the best part of Iowa – its small towns. In 2024, due to an overwhelming response from the community, Perry will proudly be the first stop on the RVTV Cy-Hawk street party tour! Budding Bookworms Storytime (Ages 2 to 5): Wednesdays – September 4, 11, 18, 25
The Perry Public Library is excited to announce our new storytime, Budding Bookworms, which combines our Toddler and Preschool storytimes into a fun, engaging 45-minute program that includes books, singing and dancing, and simple crafts. Our goal is to provide caregivers with an opportunity to introduce their children to good literature, encourage growth in children’s literacy skills (reading, talking, singing, playing, and writing), and promote the library as an enjoyable place where learning is fun. The theme for September is Emotions and Feelings. We will read books and talk about some basic emotions and how to recognize them, as well as learn some basic mindfulness tools and affirmations. We may even try a little bit of yoga! This program is free and open to the public. Registration is required by Tuesday, September 3. Adventure in the World of Dungeons and Dragons: Tuesdays – September 3, 10, 17, 24
Join D&D enthusiast, Alex, as she invites players into the world of Dungeons and Dragons and a new campaign, CandleKeep Mysteries. This campaign is based around a magical library of Candlekeep and every week will be a one-shot adventure based around a magical book! This one shot inside of a larger campaign style of play makes it great for popping into one week or becoming a regular. Whether you are new to Dungeons and Dragons, or a more experienced player, patrons 10 and older are invited to join us in the Perry Public Library Community Room on Tuesday nights in September for a series of new adventures! New! Senior Group at the Library (Includes Fresh Conversations): Wednesdays – September 4, 11, 18, 25
We’re excited to continue offering dynamic senior programming at the Perry Public Library! The much-loved Fresh Conversations educational program from Aging Resources is coming to a close on September 25 (special September date). No need to worry, though! Join us at the same time – 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm – EVERY Wednesday for fun, fresh content. This includes flexible fitness for seniors with Judy Tomenga, focused on strength, flexibility, and balance to keep participants enjoying everyday activities. Join us for our first meeting on Sepember 4 to help us select a new name and to offer input and ideas for future topics and activities. Wee Wonders Storytime (Ages Birth to 24 Months): Thursdays – September 5, 12, 19, 26
Wee Wonders is an early literacy lapsit program for babies birth through 24 months and their caregivers. We sing songs and rhymes, read simple books, do fingerplays and bounces, and incorporate motor skills with shakers and scarves. There is also a period of social play at the end of each program. Plus, each participating baby gets a free board book every time they come to the program. This program is free to the public. Registration is required by Wednesday, September 4. Chess Club at the Library: Thursdays – September 5, 12, 19, 26
Are you interested in learning how to play chess? Do you already know how to play, but are looking for some local players to challenge? Could you use some tips and practice to improve your skill level? Local Chess Instructor David Oliveira is partnering with the Perry Public Library to teach, mentor, and play chess with players of all ages and experience levels. Whether you are new to chess or looking for a challenging game, mark your Thursday evenings in September for chess instruction and walk-in play at the Library. Students, grades K-12, will meet from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, in the library Board Room. Chess players of all ages are then welcome to meet from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, also in the Board Room, for instruction or competition. David Oliveira leads the group meetings and also offers chess instruction by individual appointments as part of the library program. Evening Family Storytime (Ages Birth to 11): Mondays – September 9, 16, 23, 30
Can’t make it to our daytime storytimes? Do you want to enjoy some family time with your children at the library? Come to our Monday Evening Family Storytime! We will follow the same theme as our daily storytime each month and incorporate different songs and activities, depending on the ages of the children who attend. The theme for September is Emotions and Feelings and we may discuss basic mindfulness techniques, and affirmations, and even do some simple yoga! No registration is required for this free program. Monthly Book Club: Storm Lake Chronicles by Art Cullen: Tuesday, September 17
September’s Monthly Book Club will welcome local author and journalist, Art Cullen, as our special guest. We will meet on Tuesday, September 17, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the Library Community Room to discuss this month’s book selection, Cullen’s Storm Lake: Change, Resilience, and Hope in America’s Heartland” and to hear the author’s perspective on this important work via Zoom. Everyone interested is invited to join the discussion and participation is free. Books can be purchased in advance for a small fee from the library or borrowed with your Perry Public Library card. Hometown Heritage at the Carnegie Library Museum Presents: Autumn Afternoon Tea: Monday, September 23
Come join the Carnegie Library Museum as we enjoy an autumn-themed tea on Monday, September 23, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. When the weather starts turning cooler, we think of those comforting autumn foods and drinks, so why not incorporate that into a wonderful tea party? During this tea, we will be enjoying teas that have an autumn touch; think pumpkin, cinnamon, and apple. Plus, we’ll sample tea sandwiches, scones, mini apple tarts, and shortbread cookies. Tickets for the Autumn Afternoon Tea will be available for purchase at the Perry Public Library beginning August 26. They are $15 per person and available while supplies last. Percy Jackson Tween Party (3rd through 5th Grades): Tuesday, September 24
Celebrate the release of the new Percy Jackson book, Wrath of the Triple Goddess, with our Percy Jackson Party for Tweens in third through fifth grade! We will meet in the Library Community Room on Tuesday, September 24, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Come make lightning bolts, laurel wreaths, Hermes wings for your shoes, Olympian shields, and Medusa masks, plus enjoy some blue snacks. Participants will also be invited to don tablecloth togas and the items they make during the program for a costume contest! This event is free and no registration is required. Paper Crafting with Kathy: Halloween Cards and Treat Boxes: Saturday, September 28
Trick or treat? You decide what to hide inside the versatile Treat Boxes we’re creating at our Halloween-themed September Paper Crafting with Kathy class! Kathy Miller leads this series of monthly how-to workshops featuring different paper crafting techniques and creative designs for making greeting cards. The craft series will be held one Saturday each month. We will meet on Saturday, September 28, in the Library Community Room from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The class is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Registration closes on September 27. All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own supplies. Are you looking for a quiet, community space to craft? Then, we have the perfect Saturday event for you! The Perry Public Library welcomes crafters and do-it-yourselfers to our dedicated makerspace – now following Paper Crafting with Kathy. You bring your ideas and supplies and we’ll supply the crafting space. Saturday Crafternoons last from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm in the Library Community Room and offer a free community space to work on projects in a comfortable environment. Plan your next work session for Saturday, September 28, at the library. Tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and everyone is invited. No reservations and no charge!
