The sixth annual Walking School Bus begins Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. in front of Perry High School Performing Arts Center at 1200 18th St. and continues each Friday morning through Nov. 22.
Registration for the healthy alternative began at the annual Back to School Night and is ongoing.
“We currently have about 20 kids signed up,” said Misty VonBehren, coordinator of the Walking School Bus program. “The permission slips went out yesterday to all of the students, so I expect to receive additional students by the beginning of next week.”
The student walkers also need adult volunteers to “ride” along and share the pleasure of exercise, meeting old friends and making new ones and having lots of fun. Perry bus walkers can also participate in the National Walk To School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 2.
“Please let me know if you would still like to be a volunteer bus driver for this season,” VonBehren said. “This program could not happen without all of the fabulous volunteers!”
Parents may sign up their children on Fridays before each walk or at school. For more information or to volunteer, call VonBehren at 515-201-9215.
