Friday’s homeward drive was a mixture of freezing rain and sleet for Perry-area commuters, with several fender benders and a rollover accident clustered on Iowa Highway 141 near O Avenue around 5 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines, the road surface temperatures were cool enough to promote icing and the freezing of precipitation on their surfaces. The forecast for Friday night and Saturday morning “remains extremely touch as temperature changes of a few degrees will make a big difference,” the NWS said.
Road temperatures will continue to drop after sunset FRiday evening, with the coldest road temperatures likely occurring between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Saturday morning.
Wind speeds are expected to fall rather rapidly toward sunrise, the NWS forecast said, decreasing to 10 mph by sunrise Saturday morning.
