The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a winter weather advisory for the Perry area from noon Wednesday until 9 a.m. Thursday, where 2 inches of snow is possible, but Guthrie, Greene and Boone counties could see 5-8 inches of snow.

A wintry mix of snow and freezing rain rain will spread northward across much of southern and central Iowa by Wednesday afternoon, becoming all snow across northern Iowa.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times are expected in the Perry area. Freezing drizzle could create a light glazing of ice Wednesday night, and some minor blowing snow might occur with wind gusts in the 20-25 mph range, but it is not expected to be significant, the NWS said.

The snow will gradually end from southwest to northeast Thursday morning.

Along with Dallas County, the winter weather advisory is in effect in Grundy, Black Hawk, Marshall, Tama, Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Adair, Madison and Warren counties.

Along with Perry, cities affected by the winter weather advisory include Grundy Center, Reinbeck, Conrad, Dike, Wellsburg, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Tama, Toledo,
Traer, Dysart, Gladbrook, Waukee, Adel, Des Moines, Newton, Grinnell, Greenfield, Stuart, Adair, Fontanelle, Winterset, Earlham, Indianola, Norwalk and Carlisle.
