Doug Latham is trying it again.
Latham retired in 2013 as superintendent of the Earlham Community School District but hardly had time to get comfortable before he was called out of retirement to serve two years as principal of St. Patrick School in Perry.
Latham began his career in educational administration at St. Pat’s, so ending there gave his working life a sense of balance and completion.
“Doug has been a precious asset to St. Patrick School,” said Dan Spellman of Perry, a member of the St. Pat’s School Board of Directors. “He stepped in when we needed him, and the whole school community is very thankful to him. He will be greatly missed.”
Latham will be succeeded at St. Pat’s July 1 by the new principal, Eddie Diaz of Perry.
Latham treated the members of Society Of Retire Educators (SORE) coffee group to cinnamon rolls and coffee Friday morning at the Perry Perk coffeeshop in Perry, promising he will continue to meet with his fellow academicians on Fridays, weather permitting.
He lives on an acreage near Earlham and said he is working on a very long “Honey Do” list — as in “Honey, do this” and “Honey, do that” — with his wife, Pat Latham.
Along with the hearty good wishes of the SORE membership, Latham was presented with a picture by St. Pat’s third grade teacher Julie Stone Hudnell. The picture shows a cross surrounded by the small hands of Hudnell’s third graders.
