A Spirit Lake man was arrested Monday after trying to avoid arrest by Waukee police officers and asking them to shoot him.

Keaton Robert Leach, 26, of 25045 182nd St., Spirit Lake, was charged with interference with official acts.

The incident began about 5:15 p.m. Monday at a residence in the 2700 block of S.E. Bluestem Drive in Waukee, where officers of the Waukee Police Department were seeking Leach, who was the subject of active arrest warrants.

The officers found Leach “in the basement in a closet underneath of the stairs,” according to court records.

Once Leach was placed in handcuffs, he “began asking officers to shoot him and asked what he needed to do to have us shoot him,” according to court records.

On the walk to the patrol vehicle, Leach allegedly “became physically resistive in handcuffs and began pulling and kicking away from” the officers, who then brought Leach “to the ground forcefully onto his back” in order to to prevent him from injuring the officers or himself, according to court records.

Leach is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $300 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a pretrial conference Aug. 6 in Dallas County District Court.
