Supply-chain bottlenecks have retarded progress on the Perry Middle School renovation project.

Progress is moving more slowly than expected on the $5.7 million Perry Middle School renovation project due to bottlenecks in the supply chain, Superintendent Clark Wicks told the Perry School Board at Monday’s regular meeting.

“It is progressing. That’s a good thing,” Wicks said of the project. “Probably not as fast as what we want it to. The biggest thing is getting supplies and materials. There’s just so much going on there.”

Wicks used the building’s new fire suppression system as an example.

“Some of the parts aren’t here, and we’re concerned about that,” he said, “but we’ll get a clearer update after July 14. We meet with the fire department on that date as well as the construction people.”

The planned renovations at the Perry Middle School include:

  • Expanded and relocated classrooms
  • Updated furniture, student desks, chairs, cabinetry and fixtures
  • Relocated and updated main office and guidance offices
  • Relocated media center and teachers’ lounge
  • A new STEM lab and computer lab
  • New wiring and electrical
  • Updated projectors
  • Updated commons area and cafeteria
  • All new lighting throughout the building
  • All new ceilings throughout the building
  • Branding throughout the building

The Perry School Board awarded the $5.7 million construction contract for the 2021 Perry Middle School renovation project in April to Urbandale-based Ball Team Construction LLC.

The Perry Middle School was built in 1959 and originally housed the Perry High School, which had previously stood at Willis Avenue at 10th Street. The current Perry High School was built in 2000.
