GRANGER — Sixteen students and two staff members each donated eight inches of their own hair as a gift for those who have lost theirs.

For the third consecutive year, students and a handful of others participated in the program Pantene Beautiful Lengths, organized by the hair-product company to aid those who have lost their hair due to treatment for cancer. Other programs the students investigated required 10 inches of healthy hair, and sometimes assessed charges for the wigs created, while the Pantene program as an eight-inch minimum and is free to recipients.

Over 12 feet of hair was collected Friday, running the three-year total, officials believe, to over 40 feet.

With schoolmates looking on, and chanting encouragement, the donating students were a little nervous at first, but soon remembered why they chose to help others and beamed smiles as their locks were sheared. Many promised to grow out their hair and donate again in the future.
