Mike Thomason of Perry, who recently retired as the longtime director of the Dallas County EMS Department, has joined the faculty of the DMACC VanKirk Career Academy in Perry as a lead instructor for the EMT program, the school announced Friday.

Thomason brings more than 25 years’ experience and expertise in emergency medicine to the DMACC faculty, and he also has previous experience as a high school instructor, said Eddie Diaz, site director at DMACC Vankirk Career Academy.

“Thomason has demonstrated a passion for educating and preparing future generations of emergency medical professionals,” said Diaz. “His commitment to excellence and his deep understanding of the industry make him the perfect fit for DMACC Vankirk Career Academy.”

As part of his role, Thomason will lead two classes during the upcoming spring semester. One class will cater to high school students with an interest in emergency medicine, and the other will be specifically designed for adult students pursuing a certificate in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Both programs aim to equip students with the skills and know how needed to excel in the field.

Diaz was enthusiastic about Thomason’s hiring and the opportunities his presence brings to students.

“We are excited to have Mike join our team,” he said. “This is an excellent chance for high school students to not only gain valuable hands-on experience and knowledge in the field of emergency medical services but also earn free college credit and obtain an EMT certificate. It opens up a world of possibilities for them to explore careers in the healthcare industry, build their resume, and learn important life saving skills.”

Registration for concurrent enrollment students (high school students) from area high schools — including ACGC, ADM, DCG, Madrid, Ogden, Panorama, Perry and Woodward-Granger — is done through their high school counselors. Registration for adult students will take place in the fall, and interested adults can reach out to perrycenter@dmacc.edu for additional information.
