
Three children — ages 11, 12 and 13 — were killed Sunday afternoon when their vehicle was broadsided by a semi on U.S. Interstate 80 near Coralville, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.
The children died when the driver of the Kia Rondo they were riding in tried to make a U-turn onto the eastbound lanes of the interstate but was broadsided by a Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer near the 231 mile marker.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., according to the ISP report.
Two surviving passengers were taken to the University of Iowa Medical Center.
The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The incident remains under investigation, the ISP said.
